What Are Biodegradable Plastic Bags Made Of?

Our materials are certified compostable and derived from:

PBAT (petro‑based but fully biodegradable)
PLA (corn starch / renewable resources)
Corn starch (natural polymer)

What about other plastic bags?

Conventional Plastic Bags

Conventional plastic bags are made from polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) – fossil‑fuel‑based polymers with strong carbon‑carbon backbones. These materials are not biodegradable in natural environments. Instead, they fragment over centuries into microplastics that persist in soil, oceans, and living organisms.

“Oxo‑degradable” Bags

Oxo‑degradable bags start with a conventional polyethylene base but contain pro‑oxidant additives – typically transition metal salts (cobalt, manganese, iron). These additives accelerate fragmentation through oxidation, but they do not enable true biodegradation. The result is microscopic plastic fragments that remain in the environment, now even harder to remove.

Paper Bags

Paper bags are made from wood pulp fibers – a renewable but resource‑intensive material. Their production consumes 3–4 times more water and energy than plastic bags. Many paper bags also contain wet‑strength resins (e.g., epichlorohydrin) to prevent tearing when wet. These additives can slow down decomposition and may leave chemical residues.
