Pet-waste bags combine three decisions that are often blurred together: will the bag resist puncture and leakage during use, is the finished construction certified for a named end-of-life environment, and does the local waste system allow pet waste to follow that route? A credible product brief answers all three separately.

Why a resin certificate is not the finished-bag answer
The converted bag may differ from the certified resin through blend ratio, colour concentrate, fragrance, printing ink, additive, gauge, tie handle, sticker, paper core or retail packaging. Some components may be outside the bag’s compostability route. Request a scope schedule that connects the exact quoted SKU to the current certificate or product listing.
Performance requirements belong beside certification
- Dimensions and hand fit: state usable opening, length and tie allowance rather than a vague small/large label.
- Gauge and strength: define load, puncture and tear tests using representative waste and handling.
- Leak integrity: agree a seal test and acceptable failure level for the production lot.
- Roll conversion: define perforation force, core or coreless format, dispenser fit and roll count.
- Storage: agree shelf life, heat and humidity conditions, lot coding and first-expire-first-out rotation.
- Artwork: control environmental claim, mark, licence number, disposal text, languages and warnings.
Do not turn “compostable” into “flushable”
A compostability certificate does not make a bag or its contents suitable for toilets or sewer systems. Local wastewater and public-health guidance controls disposal of dog and cat waste. Keep flushability wording out of product artwork unless a separate, authoritative route explicitly supports the exact item and use.
The seven checks before artwork approval
- Define every destination country, state or locality and sales channel.
- Write the intended disposal instruction in plain language before selecting a logo.
- Confirm the certificate or listing is current and names the holder and relevant product family.
- Match formulation, gauge, colour, ink, closure, core and other components to the scope.
- Confirm the certifier’s mark-use and licence-number rules.
- Check local acceptance of both the bag and pet waste; document any “general waste only” market.
- Lock the approved artwork and evidence revision to the purchase specification.
RFQ template for private-label pet bags
Send bag width and length, gauge or performance target, colour, scent if any, print coverage, roll count, core and dispenser dimensions, retail pack, annual volume, destination markets and intended claim. Add the required certificate or evidence route and the date artwork must be approved. This is enough for a supplier to identify gaps before sampling.
