What PPWR means for packaging importers
If you import compostable packaging into the EU, PPWR changes your compliance obligations in three concrete ways. Here is what to prepare.
1. Certification becomes mandatory
From 12 August 2026, all compostable packaging placed on the EU market must hold EN 13432 (or equivalent) certification from a notified body. Self-declarations and uncertified "biodegradable" claims are no longer sufficient.
2. Labelling rules change
PPWR standardises compostable packaging labelling across the EU. Products must bear the official compostability mark and disposal instructions, harmonised into a single EU framework.
3. PFAS restrictions apply
PPWR restricts per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food-contact packaging. Verify with your supplier that formulations are PFAS-free and documented in the certification file.
