Key milestones of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation
11 February 2025
Regulation (EU) 2025/40 enters into force
PPWR officially replaces Directive 94/62/EC. Binding in all Member States without national transposition.
12 August 2026
Full applicability begins
PFAS restriction in food‑contact packaging, packaging minimisation, standardised labelling, and declaration of conformity become mandatory.
12 February 2028
Mandatory compostability for specific packaging
Tea bags, coffee capsules, fruit and vegetable stickers, and very lightweight plastic carrier bags must be industrially compostable (certified to EN 13432 or equivalent).
1 January 2030
Recycled content & recyclability targets
Plastic packaging must contain minimum recycled content (e.g., 30% for PET contact packaging). All packaging must be designed for recyclability.
1 January 2030
First waste reduction milestone
Packaging waste must be reduced by 5% compared to 2018 baseline. Additional targets: 10% by 2035, 15% by 2040.
1 January 2032
Plastic packaging reduction target
Plastic packaging waste must be reduced by 25% (by weight) across the EU.

Look for third‑party certifications such as EN 13432 (DIN CERTCO), ASTM D6400 (BPI), or OK compost HOME/INDUSTRIAL (TÜV Austria). These standards verify that the material biodegrades ≥90% within 180 days in industrial composting (or 12 months at home) and leaves no toxic residue. Esinle provides full certification documents for every product batch.

Yes – our Home Compostable Trash Liners carry the OK compost HOME certification. They break down at ambient temperatures within 12 months in a well‑managed home compost bin. For industrial compostable products (e.g., our poop bags and films), we recommend sending them to a municipal composting facility.
In a landfill environment (anaerobic, low moisture), compostable plastics degrade much slower and may produce methane. While still better than conventional plastic (which persists for centuries), the ideal disposal is industrial or home composting. Esinle provides clear disposal instructions on every package to help you choose the best option.
Absolutely. All Esinle bags and films are certified to EN 13432 (DIN CERTCO), the reference standard for industrial compostability in the EU. We also hold OK compost HOME and BPI (ASTM D6400) certifications. Our test reports and certificates are available upon request – radical transparency is our policy.
