Step 1: Audit your certification files
Every compostable packaging format placed on the EU market now requires EN 13432 (or equivalent) certification from a notified body. Self-declarations and uncertified "biodegradable" claims are no longer sufficient.
Pull the certificate for each SKU you import and check its validity window. Expired certificates break compliance immediately — renewal through the notified body takes weeks, not days.
Step 2: Revise your labelling
The harmonised compostability mark and disposal instructions must appear on pack. If your current artwork predates the PPWR framework, plan a label revision with your supplier now.
The full-enforcement deadline for labelling is 12 August 2028 — but importers who wait until 2028 will be reworking packaging artwork at peak demand.
Step 3: Calendar your reporting obligations
Recyclability and recycled-content reporting begins 12 February 2027, and recycled-content minimums start phasing in from 2029. Put both dates on your compliance calendar.
Reporting failures carry penalties independent of product certification — the paperwork calendar matters as much as the certificates.
