The phrase “ASTM D6400 tested” is often used as if it answers every compliance question. It does not. ASTM publishes a technical specification; a laboratory generates test evidence; a certification body reviews a defined product family; and a local law or collection program determines how a claim may be used. Procurement teams need all four layers to line up.
What ASTM D6400 testing is designed to evaluate
ASTM D6400 is used for plastics and products designed for aerobic composting in municipal or industrial facilities. The assessment is broader than watching a sample become brittle. It considers whether the material biodegrades under the test conditions, whether the finished item disintegrates, whether regulated constituents stay within the applicable limits and whether the resulting compost passes the required plant-response or ecotoxicity checks.

The standards have comparable decision categories, but test details, thresholds, editions and certification-program rules can differ. Do not convert one certificate into an unsupported claim for the other market. Ask the certifier or laboratory to identify the exact edition and route used for the product you are buying.
Standard, test report and certificate are three different things
- Standard: the published technical requirements and referenced test methods.
- Test report: results for named samples under stated conditions. Check laboratory competence, dates and sample traceability.
- Certificate or product listing: a certification decision covering a defined holder, product family and conditions of mark use.
A resin certificate may help a converter build a compliant formulation, but it does not automatically certify every bag or film produced from that resin. Printing, colour concentrate, adhesive, label, closure, gauge and conversion process can change the finished-product scope.

- Current certificate or public product listing showing holder, product or family, standard and status.
- Scope schedule covering formulation, finished format, maximum gauge or thickness, colours and allowed components.
- Supporting test summary that identifies the sample, laboratory, methods and results relevant to the claim.
- Final specification and bill of materials connecting the quoted SKU to the certified construction.
- Artwork approval showing the exact mark, licence or registration number, disposal wording and destination market.
- Change-control statement explaining when a new resin, gauge, ink, adhesive or supplier triggers re-review.
How to audit a certificate before ordering
- Search the certification body’s current public directory where available; do not rely only on a badge image.
- Match the certificate holder and manufacturing or converting entity to the proposed supply chain.
- Match the quoted product name, formulation and construction to the certificate schedule.
- Check the validity, renewal status and edition of the underlying standard or scheme.
- Confirm that your intended claim and mark placement are authorised in the target jurisdiction.
- Ask the receiving composting program whether it accepts the product category; certification and local acceptance are separate decisions.
