PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Why specify ES-SB-05
ES-SB-05 is our home-compostable T-shirt bag — for markets where OK Compost HOME (AS 5810) is the required standard and industrial composting infrastructure is not assumed..
The differentiator is the certification tier. OK Compost HOME is the more demanding standard — it requires degradation at ambient temperature (20–30 °C) in a typical backyard compost pile, not the controlled 58 °C+ of an industrial facility.
Where it sits in our range. ES-SB-05 sits between the standard T-shirt (ES-SB-03) and the heavy-duty (ES-SB-01) in both price and thickness.
When not to specify it. If your market accepts industrial compostable certification (EN 13432 / ASTM D6400) — which most municipal programmes do — ES-SB-03 or ES-SB-01 will meet your compliance requirement at a lower cost.
If your market accepts industrial compostable certification (EN 13432 / ASTM D6400) — which most municipal programmes do — ES-SB-03 or ES-SB-01 will meet your compliance requirement at a lower cost. Home compostable is a premium specification; only pay for it if your customers demand it or your regulation requires it.

HONEST TRANSPARENCY
Limitations & Storage
Home-compostable formulations require disciplined inventory rotation: shelf life is 12 months from manufacture when stored cool, dry, and away from direct sunlight. Order quantities should be calibrated to 6-month inventory turns. Also note that home compostability requires consumer education; we provide free point-of-sale signage and QR-code-linked composting guides with every order.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Will this bag actually break down in my backyard compost?
Yes — that is the core promise of AS 5810 / OK Compost Home certification. In a well-managed backyard pile (maintained at 20-30°C with regular turning), expect 85%+ disintegration within 180 days. Shredding the bag speeds the process. Worm bins (vermicomposting) are also effective — worms consume the film as a carbon source.
What happens if a customer puts this in the trash instead of compost?
In a landfill, anaerobic conditions slow biodegradation significantly. However, the bag will still eventually break down — just over a longer timeframe (estimated 2-5 years vs. 180 days in compost). It will never fragment into persistent microplastics, which is the critical difference from conventional plastic.
Is the 20-micron film strong enough to replace my current plastic bags?
For 90% of retail use cases — yes. The 10 lb rating covers typical grocery loads. The film has been independently tested for Elmendorf tear strength (MD: 380 mN, TD: 420 mN) and dart drop impact (110g) — values that place it in the same performance band as 15-micron HDPE bags.
