PLA vs PBAT vs Starch for Biodegradable Mulch Film

Agricultural mulch film is not simply thin compostable packaging. It must survive installation, wind, irrigation, soil contact and a defined crop cycle, then follow the intended in-soil end-of-life route. The formulation is therefore a balance of field performance, processing, evidence scope and commercial cost.

What each component can contribute

ComponentTypical role in a blendTrade-off to validateBuyer evidence
PLAStiffness, structure and a bio-based contribution for many grades.Brittleness, heat response and compatibility with the other components.Grade, feedstock claim if relevant, mechanical data and finished-film trial.
PBATFlexibility, elongation and toughness for thin blown film.Feedstock is commonly fossil-derived; performance and degradation depend on grade and blend.Exact grade, SDS/TDS, blend scope and intended-environment evidence.
Thermoplastic starchBio-based content, formulation economics and biodegradation behaviour.Moisture sensitivity, dispersion, film consistency and storage stability.Source, content, conditioning and mechanical results at relevant humidity.
Additives and pigmentsProcessing, UV response, slip, antiblock, opacity and colour. They can change field life, ecotoxicity, certification scope and claim wording.Controlled bill of materials and coverage in the finished-product evidence.

The correct standard starts with the disposal environment

Mulch film intended to be tilled into agricultural soil needs assessment for biodegradation in soil. In Europe, EN 17033 is the relevant product standard for biodegradable mulch films used in agriculture and horticulture. TÜV AUSTRIA also operates an OK biodegradable SOIL certification route.

EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 concern controlled composting routes. They may be relevant to other products or claims, but an industrial-compostability certificate alone does not prove a mulch film’s in-soil biodegradation or agronomic performance.

Specify the crop program before the polymer ratio

  1. Crop and dates: planting, expected canopy closure, harvest and till-in timing.
  2. Location and climate: soil and air temperature, rainfall, irrigation, wind and UV exposure.
  3. Bed and equipment: bed width, roll width, laying machine, speed, tension and soil preparation.
  4. Performance: weed suppression, soil warming or cooling, moisture control, puncture and tear priorities.
  5. Construction: gauge, colour, layer structure, perforation, roll length and core.
  6. End of season: till-in method, residue handling, next crop and any farm-program restrictions.
  7. Evidence and claims: destination standard, exact certificate scope, artwork and traceability.

Why a universal degradation promise is unreliable

Breakdown rate changes with film thickness and formulation as well as soil temperature, moisture, microbial activity, pH, UV exposure and farming practice. A laboratory result establishes performance under a defined method; it is not a calendar guarantee for every field.

Define two separate acceptance windows: the film must retain enough integrity during the crop’s critical period, and it must meet the applicable biodegradation or ecotoxicity requirements in its evidence route. The first requires field validation; the second requires controlled testing and certification.

What to request before a commercial order

  • Product specification and controlled formulation or product-family reference.
  • Current soil-biodegradation certificate or test evidence and exact scope schedule.
  • Ecotoxicity and regulated-constituent evidence required by the applicable route.
  • Mechanical and ageing data relevant to the proposed gauge and climate.
  • Storage, transport and shelf-life instructions.
  • Production-representative trial roll and written field-trial acceptance criteria.

Frequently asked questions

What do PLA and PBAT each do in mulch film?

PLA commonly contributes stiffness and structure, while PBAT commonly contributes flexibility and toughness. The actual result depends on grades, ratio, additives, processing and film construction.

Does adding starch automatically improve the film?

No. Starch can affect bio-based content, cost and degradation behaviour, but it can also affect moisture response, dispersion and mechanical consistency. Validate the finished blend.

Is EN 13432 enough for biodegradable mulch film?

Not by itself for an in-soil claim. Agricultural mulch intended to biodegrade in soil needs evidence for that environment, such as the applicable EN 17033 or OK biodegradable SOIL scope.

How long will a PLA/PBAT mulch film last in the field?

There is no universal duration. Specify the crop and climate, agree a field-life target and validate a production-representative construction under local conditions.
