PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Why specify ES-MF-01
Biodegradable agricultural mulch film made from PLA+PBAT (40:60) blown film, designed to be laid at the start of the growing season and tilled directly into the soil after harvest. At 20\u03bcm thickness and 1.2m width, it provides equivalent weed suppression and soil moisture re
The economic value is in eliminating end-of-season plastic mulch removal and disposal, the most labor-intensive and environmentally damaging step in plasticulture. In-situ biodegradation takes 6\u201312 months depending on soil temperature and microbial activity, breaking down to
Where it sits in our range. ES-MF-01 is the entry-point biodegradable mulch film, optimized for temperate broadacre vegetable production at the most competitive per-hectare cost in our range.

USE CASES
Applications
Vegetable Row Crops
Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucurbits — standard plasticulture crops where mulch film provides weed control, soil warming, and moisture retention
Organic Farming
Certified organic production where biodegradable mulch meets organic standards for soil integration — no microplastic residue in certified organic soil
Smallholder & Greenhouse Production
Manual or mechanical laying for protected and open-field cultivation — light roll weight (12 kg per 400m roll) enables manual handling
HONEST TRANSPARENCY
Limitations & Storage
Not suitable for perennial crops where mulch must remain intact for 12+ months — biodegradation will begin within the first growing season. In very cold soils (< 10°C), biodegradation rate slows significantly — film may persist for 18+ months before full degradation. Mechanical laying requires soil temperature above 12°C for optimal film flexibility. For black mulch specifically, soil warming effect is approximately 2–3°C less than LDPE at equivalent thickness due to different thermal properties.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How long does the film take to biodegrade in soil?
Under standard soil conditions (15–28°C, 40–80% water holding capacity, pH 5.5–8.0), the film biodegrades 90%+ within 12 months as verified by EN 17033 testing. In warmer soils (25°C+), visible fragmentation begins at 3–4 months with complete biodegradation at 6–8 months. The film is designed to maintain mechanical integrity through the full growing season (3–5 months depending on crop) before significant degradation begins.
Does the degradation process harm soil health?
No. EN 17033 certification specifically requires ecotoxicity testing — germination and earthworm toxicity — to verify that degradation products do not harm soil biology. Independent soil testing after 24 months of consecutive use showed no accumulation of polymer residues, no reduction in earthworm populations, and no effect on crop germination rates vs. unmulched control plots.
Can I use this film with drip irrigation under the mulch?
Yes. Our biodegradable mulch film is compatible with surface and subsurface drip irrigation. The film does not interfere with drip tape emitters. For subsurface drip, ensure the film is properly tensioned during laying to prevent sagging that could contact emitters. Many growers using our mulch with drip irrigation report improved water use efficiency vs. bare soil cultivation.
